Most Essential Skin Concepts for Summer

by Alisha Nandy 08 May 2019 0 Comments

When it comes to India, it’s mostly warm throughout the year. It obviously sounds less of a hassle for not having the need to layer up your clothes, but with the summers, comes a responsibility towards living a less complex life whilst beating the heat and still keeping up with the style.

Understanding UVA and UVB

While the sun is a natural source of Vitamin- D, it also contains harmful ultraviolet rays in the form of UVA and UVB which plays the main role in causing skin diseases and melanoma (skin cancer). Until the sun sets and its dark outside, the UV rays are equally present both indoors and outdoors. While glass effectively blocks UVB rays (the shorter rays that lead to sunburn), UVA rays (the longer rays that penetrate deeper into your skin and are to blame for wrinkles, sunspots and other signs of sun damage) do pass through glass.

Significance of Sunscreens

  • Exposing your skin to the sun more than 10 minutes a day without sunscreen is not recommended by the experts.
  • Sunscreen is a must during the peak time from 10 a.m to 3 p.m (regardless of whether you are indoor or outdoor) as the UV Index during that time reads of 6 to 7, which means high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure (which causes photodamage and photoaging) due to the presence of carcinogen in it; hence protection against skin damage is highly recommended.
  • If you step out, you are directly exposing yourself to the sun. In that case, wearing sunglasses, full sleeved clothes along with a broad spectrum of sunscreen (at least an SPF of 30) before 30 mins of stepping out which combats both UVA and UVB rays are mandatory. Also, make sure to reapply after every 90 minutes as sunscreen tends to wear out with time and more frequently if in contact with water.

Overcoming Skin Problems and Tanning

Tanning is an epitome of the summer season along with acne due to the sun’s heat even if you keep the sunscreen situation up. Also with the city’s pollutants and the excessive oil secretion by the sebaceous glands tend to clog our pores, cause acne and make our skin look dull. While tanning during the summers might seem inevitable, you can actually overcome the dullness along with other skin concerning problems by investing in a good skin care regime with the correct ingredients to beat the skin issues of summer effectively.

Washing your face twice daily.

A good facial cleansing routine will remove excess sebum  from the skin’s surface and help prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Keeping in concern the urban life and the amount of pollution our skin goes through throughout the day, a deep cleanse with the right cleanser before hitting the hay would work as a kick to defend your skin from harsh environmental conditions, brighten your skin and keep skin issues at bay. But it is as important to wash your face the very next thing after you wake up in the morning because our skin produces oil while we are asleep and can clog pores. Washing your face after you wake up keeps your pores clean and leaves your skin looking the best.

  • Exfoliating twice a week
It is very important to include a scrub into your skin care at least twice a week before going to bed to get rid of the dead/dry skin on the surface (epidermis), removes balck-heads allowing your skin to breathe and does away with many skin problems. But exfoliation also helps in increasing the blood circulation which in turn helps you to achieve healthy and glowing skin. Opt for a charcoal scrub as it would benefit you with skin purifying properties. But make sure you don’t exfoliate too often as it might lead your skin to breakout.

  • Face Masking

By now you are aware that washing your face and exfoliating it is quite essential. But a lot more help can be done to your skin by incorporating a face mask in your routine which can actually help deep cleanse your pores, reduce acne, lighten scars and tanning by boosting the exfoliation further and add a glow to the entire face whilst stabilizing the oil production. Going for a charcoal peel off mask would work wonders for your skin.

Now, you must be wondering why rave so much about Activated Charcoal? Here’s why-

The Importance of  Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is a fine black powder made from bone char, coconut shells, peat, petroleum coke, coal, olive pits or sawdust by processing it at very high temperatures. It works by trapping toxins and chemicals, preventing their absorption. Activated charcoal is known for its strong properties of drawing micro particles, such as dirt, dust, chemicals, toxins, and bacteria, to the surface of the skin, to make removing them easier, and hence deliver the most deep cleansing and refreshing face care.
