Why you won't find any parabens in our men's grooming essentials

Parabens are one of the most controversial skin care ingredients and we at Spruce are determined to ensure you don't find them in our products. You see, when it comes to grooming, we're naturals. We're committed to the integrity of our grooming essentials and trust that our faith in the goodness of all things natural will be repaid with a soothing, luxurious experience for you.

Parabens are a chemical preservative. The paraben content you find in a skincare product is added by cosmetic chemists to extend their shelf life. Parabens prevent the growth of bacteria and mould in your products, and to that extent they're great, but there are other effects which are deemed so bad that the EU has banned their use!

The thing about parabens is that they're some of the most commonly used ingredients in the cosmetics industry because they're cheap. But studies have shown that parabens are linked with a number of negative health consequences including hormonal imbalances, reduction of fertility and increased risk of cancer. For example, a study conducted by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health showed a link between reduced fertility and the long-chain paraben known as propylparaben. Other studies have shown links with parabens like butyl paraben reducing sperm count and testosterone as well.

So the fact that the US FDA has gone ahead and allowed its use should be taken with a grain of salt as their standards for safety in beauty and cosmetic products are not as stringent as those taken by the EU. There exists a pro-paraben lobby, that claims that they're safe and the countless studies done have their short falls.  At Spruce, we believe that there are safer and equally effective alternatives to paraben based preservatives! which do, at the end of the day, prevent pathogens and harmful bacteria from entering your personal care products.
